Keys

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:19

Please read and/or listen to Matthew 16:13-20 again today. Today we will focus on the keys that have been given. Jesus has a conversation with Peter and the disciples. He lets them know that he will be building his church using them. Peter will be the first to declare the message (Acts 2), but the other apostles will carry the message as well and will become the foundation on which the church will be built, with Jesus as the Cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). He will entrust them with the keys of the kingdom of heaven. It is uncertain how they would have understood this at the time. It may have been this that led to the conversation of who would be greatest in the kingdom. We will soon see that these keys are meant to be passed on. Each person who trusts in Jesus is then entrusted with these keys. It is the message of the cross. For some it will open the door and for some it will lock the door (1 Corinthians 1:18). We see Peter proclaiming the truth of the gospel on the day of Pentecost and about 3,000 people were saved. Countless thousands more were not. This is the truth of the gospel of grace. The message given does not ensure that a person will accept the message. The same key that opens the door for some locks the door for all others. We have been entrusted with the keys. They have been passed to us. What are you doing with the keys entrusted to you? Are you sharing the message, building on the foundation that has been laid?
