I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13
Let’s just focus on this verse today. Do you know that you have eternal life? John tells his readers that what he has written has been intended to give them the information they need so that they may know they have eternal life. John has taught that God is light, love, and life, and that it is Christ Jesus who can bring you from the darkness into the light; from hatred to love; and from death to life. All that he has written to them has been written to remind them of the truths they know—the truths that can hold them against the false teachings that has swirled around them. He is re-rooting them into truth—the truth that allows them to know they are born of God, which in turn, allows them to know they have eternal life. Notice that it is sure for all who believe in the name of the Son of God. So, is that you? Do you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you have eternal life? If not, take some time to reread 1 John, asking God to show you the truths you need to embrace so that you may be sure. If you are sure, use this as a reminder to spend some time in awe of the One who made it possible for you.
